SIF Potential Near Miss: Falling Object

An Area Coordinator was standing on the first floor of a warehouse, underneath the 2nd floor mezzanine, when a cordless band saw fell from the mezzanine level hitting the 1st floor.  The band saw was sitting close to the edge of the mezzanine when it was struck by a ladder during the material removal process.  An employee associated with the project was standing about 8’-10’ away from where the band saw landed but was unharmed.

Factors to consider at your site or on your project include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Contract Firm Corporate Safety Manager communicated to employees no materials or tools will be stored or placed within 3 feet of a leading edge.
  2. Contract firm installed Coroplast (corrugated plastic) barriers along the edge of the mezzanine.
  3. Contract Superintendent to performed an assessment specific to housekeeping and material/equipment/ tool staging (First to focus on activities at elevated work surfaces, i.e. mezzanine).
  4. Safety plans updated to include specific details as to how the contract firm will provide protection from falling objects.
