Rebar Causing Laceration

An employee’s wrist was lacerated by a piece of rebar, resulting in stitches.   The employee was removing a hairpin from a shipment/storage bag.  As he moved the piece, it "grabbed" another hairpin, which came in contact with the employee’s wrist.  The upward motion from pulling the rebar out caused the other piece to lacerate the contractor's wrist.  The employee needed to keep his eye on the task as he reached into the bag blind.

Factors to consider at your site or on your project include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Gloves provide hand and wrist protection, keep them pulled up
  2. Do not reach into areas blind
  3. Utilize long sleeves or Kevlar sleeves to limit exposure

Consider this example as you complete today’s work activities.

Think about the hazards associated with your particular work, and the steps that can be taken to increase safety on your job.
