Mechanical Contractor Cuts Heat Trace

Employee was waiting on a hot work permit to begin his demo of a 42” condenser water pipe.  He decided to do some housekeeping while waiting and was removing a piece of heat trace that was wrapped around the piping to the pump. The diagonal cutters needed were lying on the other side of the pump. When he retrieved his cutters he stepped over another piece of heat trace on his way back. He decided to cut it while he was on that side of the pump. He didn’t know that piece of heat trace wasn’t the same as what he had been cutting previously.

Factors to consider at your site or on your project include, but are not limited to, the following:

1) The heat trace was disconnected by one company and removed by another.

2) During the pre-planning phase of the project, the mechanical company and the electrical company did not communicate their job scopes to each other.

3)  Housekeeping is to be done as the work progresses.
