Chemical Exposure

Contractors were operating filter press, processing waste. The waste was known to produce high levels of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S).   A monitoring plan was initiated prior to the start of work tasks; while any workers were inside the structure for the filter press they were required to wear a personal monitor capable of detecting Hydrogen Sulfide.  The contractor employees were cleaning the plates of the filter press when their personal monitors began to alarm.  The employees ignored the alarms and continued to work.  Another employee outside the structure heard the alarms and told the two workers to evacuate the structure immediately.

Factors to consider at your site or on your project include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1.  Ensure employees are trained in hazard recognition.
  2.  Communicate all action plans to employees prior to work tasks beginnin.
  3.  Communicate hazards to workers on a daily basis.
