Broken Tooth

A contractor sustained a broken/chipped tooth while removing concrete shore jacks.  The "Doka" floor prop is adjustable by means of threads.  The supplied handle is struck via hammer to ensure a tight fight, or loosen while under pressure. The employee was attempting to unscrew or loosen the shore.  The employee struck the handle, and the handle swung around, striking the employee in the mouth

Factors to consider at your site or on your project include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Do not use excessive force, if not needed
  2. Keep adequate distance from striking area
  3. Face shields should be utilized to protect employee’s face
  4. Use “lessons learned” when performing tasks

Consider this example as you complete today’s work activities.

Think about the hazards associated with your particular work, and the steps that can be taken to increase safety on your job.
