Plant Life Conceals Unsafe Condition

Plant Life Conceals Unsafe Condition

A landscape maintenance employee was spraying weed killer along a strip of grass wearing a back pack sprayer.  While walking along a narrow strip of grass, the employee stepped into a hole that was overgrown with weeds. The weeds and grass had grown over the hole making it difficult to see.  The employee sunk into the hole above the right knee resulting in a strain to the hip and groin.

Factors to consider at your site and/or project include, but not limited to the following:

  1. Always investigate your work area for potential hazardous conditions and immediately correct the unsafe condition to eliminate the hazard.
  2. Report unsafe conditions if they are noticed outside your work area to your supervisor or area safety representative.  Even though the unsafe condition may not affect your work for that day, a co-worker or other employees may eventually be exposed to the same unsafe condition.
  3. Seek medical treatment immediately after an injury occurs no matter how minor you believe the injury to be.  Sprains and strains tend to become worse over time following an injury.  If proper medical treatment is immediately applied it may reduce swelling, control pain and decrease the risk of further injury to the area.
  4. Hazard assessments must be completed for every job to determine the most appropriate way to control all hazards.
Consider this example as you complete today’s work activities.
