Icy Condition on Roof Causes Slip and Fall

Icy Condition on Roof Causes Slip and Fall

A crew of roofing contractors were replacing a roof when one of them slipped and fell due to the icy condition on the roof.  As one of the workers was removing old roofing material with a wheelbarrow, his co-worker moved out of the way and onto the new section of the roof.  As he moved onto the new section of the roof, he slipped and fell causing him to land on his back and hit the back of his head on the roof.  The icy conditions formed from the previous day when it had rained and then the temperature fell 32 degrees, freezing any remaining water on the roof.

The roofing contractor was initially taken to an on-site nurse for examination.  The on-site nurse referred him off-site to be examined where he was diagnosed with a lower thoracic lumbar strain.

Factors to consider at your site and/or project include, but not limited to the following:

·         Inspect your work area at the beginning of your shift to identify any potential hazards.

·         Be aware of existing slippery conditions and ones that may occur during your shift.

·         Always follow company procedures regarding work on slick surfaces.

·         Provide adequate lighting to help a worker see a potential slick surface.

·         Properly barricade slick areas to prevent unwanted/unneeded traffic through the area.

·         Always try to avoid walking on slick surfaces.

Consider this example as you complete today’s work activities.
