High tensile bolt connections on tower cranes

General Information to share:

On 01/27/07 the UK HSE issued a technical alert to remind those who own, operate and hire tower cranes to ensure that high tensile bolt connections are correctly installed and pre-loaded (tensioned). Failure to do so could lead to catastrophic consequences. 

The alert informs those responsible for the installation, thorough examination, inspection, maintenance and operation of tower cranes to ensure the following:

Use of correct bolt connections
Examination of bolt connections before assembly
Correct assembly of bolt connections 
Re-tensioning of bolt connections
Regular inspection and examination of bolt connections
Taking crane out of service when bolt connection problems occur
