Back Strain!

A contracted employee was in the process of weed eating when he felt a pop in his lower back.  Immediately after feeling the pop in his lower back, the contractor reported experiencing severe lower back pain.  After reporting the incident to his supervisor, the injured contractor was taken off-site to receive medical treatment and was diagnosed with a lower thoracic lumbar strain.

Factors to consider at your site and/or project include, but not limited to the following:

  • Always wear the proper PPE for the job.
  • Take frequent brakes during hot weather.
  • Be aware of the surrounding conditions (i.e. hot weather).
  • Consider stretching exercises to loosen and strengthen muscles.
  • Consider the use of a shoulder strap for all grass/weed trimming operations even though the grass/weed trimmer may not require one for a particular piece of equipment.
Consider this example as you complete today’s work activities.
